The freedom of creativity

I like to watch old movies, listen to old music, read biographies on old artists. Times were different back then, it was better, that’s what we all heard from our parents … And today, I came to an age when I’d say the same thing to the kids. We are not in the process of evolution anymore, we’re living in a world of what I’d like to call dissolution. Our mind was great and powerful but now, with every generation dissolving it, we’re going to end with an empty cocktail. Like in homeopathy, the basic ingredient is still there, but soon the effects will vanish…

Our society doesn’t give us the desire to THINK. All we do is superficial, all we do is copy what others are doing. People are making photocopies of each others lifes. How many people out there are sitting at night looking at the sky and thinking about how to create something new, how to improve themselves, how to discover unknown territories. Look around, everything is prepared for you. It’s like we already found everything about life. They show you what you need to be and they crop you until you fit in. And I’m fitting in too, I’m not blind…

But I like to think that my desire to accomplish new things will drive me further everyday, and I hope to never loose this desire.

Last time I watched an old interview of Louis de Funes, a fantastic french comedian who pasted away in 1983 and I would like to share it with you, in the light of what I’ve written before. De Funes is talking about his work as an actor:

I don’t want to be directed anymore. Like a director who is telling me where to stand and how to do it. I don’t know why he would tell me, I’m the only one who can fill it. But he can tell me ”maybe you should try this”. Try ? Ah, all right, trying is ok ! The orders, I don’t accept them anymore. There is too much nonsense in the world of comedians. And that’s why so many artists, who are equally good or even better than me, are down right now, because they let others tell them what to do, just to get their check at the end.

Let’s say an actor comes in front of a ”so called” director. And he’s scared. I don’t understand why. And this director says ”Ok, you are going to stand there, (No, no, be quiet), and you’re going to do that, (no, shut up shut up) and you’re going to say that exactly like this. It’s going to be perfect.” And at the end, There’s nothing!

People like (french actors) are authors. A comedian is primarly an author. One should never give them written text to play. One should tell them, ok the situation is like this, now write your text, you’ll tell me how you see it, and then guide him, gentely ….
